DHS uses information technology (IT) to assist the organization in achieving its objectives. Consistency in DHS IT allows the development of efficient and cost-effective methods for supporting and managing the environment and in planning for upgrades, migrations, staff training, and future technology installations.
The Office of Information Services (OIS) is responsible for establishing IT standards for use within DHS.
All DHS sections and employees shall follow and use the IT standards established by OIS.
OIS shall review requests for new, amended, or replacement IT standards. OIS shall use DHS-wide business and technical needs in determining approval of new, amended, or replacement standards.
Exceptions to IT standards shall be reviewed and approved by OIS.
Exceptions shall be allowed only under extraordinary circumstances where a unique need cannot be met by existing standards. When an exception is allowed, the requester and OIS must agree upon a plan for technical support, training, and maintenance of non-standard products prior to purchase.
Exceptions shall be considered provisional and can be superseded any time a DHS standard is determined. If a broader need is determined at the time of an exception request, then a DHS standard will be established.
Standard: Minimum criteria established by authority, custom, or consensus, against which individual actions and decisions at all levels of an organization are measured.
