Community partners This term covers all of the local non-profits, school districts, law enforcement agencies, faith based groups, and the multitude of others who share similar client populations with DHS and help provide services and benefits to these individuals and families.

Conferences The Department sponsors or co-sponsors several conferences every biennium on topics that relate DHS health and social services or public health. There are often a variety of workshops, plenary sessions, and keynote speakers.

Course description A short description of a training class, workshop, conference, NetLink, or other training event that is found in the DHS Learning Center . The course description will indicate the basic course content, intended audience and any audience limitations.

Discipline A body of knowledge and the practice thereof that is specialized; often with an array of programs, initiatives, technical assistance, regulation, quality control, services or benefits for clients, consumers or citizens of Oregon. DHS health and social services or public health disciplines include child welfare, self-sufficiency, vocational rehabilitiation, working with seniors, working with people with disabilities, epidemiology, mental health, addiction services, child and maternal health, etc. DHS business operations disciplines include contract administration, human resource management, organization development, computer technology, etc.

Distance learning Distance learning is a catch-all phrase relating to teaching methods using computer and/or video technology that allow the learner to remain at their work site while learning. In DHS this includes use of NetLink, web-based training, and video and video-conferencing. This is a new field in training methodology and DHS will continue to expand e-learning opportunities.

Organization development Organization Development is a combination of services that are intended to improve the ability of DHS and its work units, teams, Service Delivery Areas or clusters to achieve DHS vision, mission, goals or outcomes. This includes management consultation, strategic planning, group or meeting facilitation, team development, conflict resolution, process improvement and other services that help work units change and improve how they conduct their business.

Training Training is a catch-all word that means classes, courses, curriculum, workshops, conferences, NetLinks, on-line learning, on-the-job training. It encompasses all teaching methods and learning strategies. It is an activity with objectives and given resources used to improve personal or organizational performance for the purpose of achieving DHS vision, mission, goals or outcomes.

Web-based A distance learning method whereby the student accesses a web site to retrieve the lesson materials. The instruction is self-paced.
